Boise resident, Hamilton College graduate Abigail Moone awarded college's $30K Bristol Fellowship
Moone will travel to five countries to explore artistic expression with the award
Clinton, NY (07/11/2023) — Boise resident Abigail Moone, a May graduate of Hamilton College, was one of two recipients of the College's prestigious Bristol Fellowship this year. Each Bristol Fellow receives a $30,000 research grant to spend a year after graduation studying an issue of personal interest. Moone, who double majored in French and Francophone studies, and women's and gender studies at Hamilton, will travel to the United Kingdom, Rwanda, Brazil, Japan, and French Polynesia to explore the project, "Inside Out: Creativity in Identity in Community Building."
Inspired by their own experiences, Moone will study how individuals explore their own identities and experiences through artistic expression. Through their work, Moone hopes to illuminate the link between identity formation and artistic expression. They plan to learn from individual artists, creative groups, art teachers, and community members in the countries they visit.
Moone is most excited about experiencing country-specific art installations and forms, ranging from a library to dance class. "I am particularly excited to visit the Glasgow Zine Library, attend poetry slams in Kigali through SpokenWord Rwanda, and learn different dances, such as zouk in Brazil," they said. "I am still processing that this will be my reality!"
At Hamilton Moone was a Dean's List student, and served as the Chaplaincy's mindfulness intern, as well as an oral communication consultant, and an orientation intern.
The Bristol Fellowship is funded by the family of William M. Bristol, Jr., Class of 1917, who served as a Hamilton trustee, president of the Alumni Association, fundraiser, and benefactor. He was one of seven generations of Bristol family members to attend Hamilton, dating back to the chartering of the College in 1812. Mr. Bristol's great, great-grandfather became one of the College's first trustees after helping to found the Hamilton-Oneida Academy, which later became Hamilton College in 1793.
