Seymour resident Ariana (Ari) Wheeler awarded Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Bulgaria
A recent Hamilton College graduate, Wheeler majored in world politics
Clinton, NY (07/18/2023) — Seymour resident and recent Hamilton College graduate Ariana (Ari) Wheeler has received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Bulgaria for 2023-24. The goal of the program is to improve foreign students' English language abilities and knowledge of the United States while increasing the Fulbright Scholar's own language skills and knowledge of the host country.
Wheeler said "The experience of living in Bulgaria, embracing Bulgarian culture, and learning about the individual experiences of my students will be transformative. I think being in a teaching and mentorship position will allow me to learn how to build relationships with my students and will help me in my own development," she added.
Wheeler will be based in Dobrich, a smaller city 45 minutes from Varna, which is the largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast.
In addition to teaching, Wheeler said she'll have the opportunity to coach speech and debate through Bulgaria's BEST foundation, and looks forward to developing critical thinking and argumentation skills among high school students.
After her year in Bulgaria, Wheeler hopes to pursue a future in education policy on a global scale to contribute to enhancing that accessibility for others.
