Nine students are participating in the Hamilton Program in Washington this fall. The program provides a combination of academic study and experience in national government. Students in the program conduct research and attend two seminars led by a resident member of Hamilton's government department, and at the same time work full time in congressional or executive offices, think tanks, NGOs, non-profits, and lobbying and consulting firms.

Himalayan Mountaineering Class Visits Nepal
Twenty Hamilton students spent spring break hiking to the base camp of Annapurna in Nepal's Himalayas. The trip was an optional part of Professor Maurice Isserman's course History of Himalayan Mountaineering. The course examines Himalayan mountaineering over the past 150 years, and its roots in imperial expansion, national competition, and cultural and social evolution. The trip was supervised by Director of Outdoor Leadership Andrew Jillings.

Off Campus Study: Hamilton in France Program
Hamilton in France provides students an international academic experience that reflects Hamilton's commitment to the liberal arts and personal exploration. The program is based in central Paris; students stay in (carefully chosen) French-speaking homes where they can live the language and culture. The program includes organized excursions/study trips to various regions in France and in and around Paris. These trips help build up the student experience in France beyond the classroom in meaningful, and fun, ways.

The Hamilton College Academic Year in Madrid, Spain, offers students the opportunity to develop true linguistic proficiency and to experience the many facets of Spanish life. Through personal contact with the culture, language, ideals, and customs of another nation, participants step beyond the familiarity and comforts of their own environment to gain a new perspective on international affairs and a greater respect for and understanding of another people.

Levitt Center Winter Break Research 2020-21
Due to this year's extended break between the fall and spring semesters, the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center offered students the opportunity to spend the time conducting research. Working individually or in faculty-led groups, more than 80 students participated, exploring a wide range of topics in 17 subject areas.

Geosciences Research in Arizona
During the 2019-20 winter break, 16 students participated in a research trip to Arizona where they explored the state's diverse array of geological features. Led by Assistant Professor of Geosciences Cat Beck and the Winslow Chair of Modern Science and Professor of Geosciences David Bailey, the students visited sites including Mount Lemmon, Biosphere 2, Saguaro National Forest, Bisbee Copper Mines, Petrified Forest National Park, Meteor Crater, Sunset Crater, and the Grand Canyon.

Students Shadow Residents at St. Elizabeth Hospital
During winter break, five students had the opportunity to shadow physicians in the St. Elizabeth Hospital's Family Medicine Residency program in Utica, N.Y. In the course of a week, the students observed residents in different rotations including ob/gyn, internal medicine, labor & delivery, family medicine, geriatrics, and emergency care.

Convocation Awards 2019
Hamilton College opens each academic year with its traditional Convocation ceremony. Members of the administration welcome students and new faculty, and academic achievement prizes are awarded to students. This year, more than 60 students received prizes at the ceremony on Aug. 28 that officially marked the beginning of Hamilton's 208th academic year.

Summer Field School in N.C.
Six Hamilton students are participating in the New River Headwaters Archaeology Project, a six-week field school in Ashe County, N.C., led by Assistant Professor of Anthropology Colin Quinn. The group is investigating a prehistoric village - the Woodie Site - conducting geophysical survey and excavations designed to find material remains from the site.

Experiencing Empathy 2019
Seven students traveled to New Orleans during spring break to learn more about the culture and cultural history of the city through the lenses of space, place, memory, and representation. The students were members of "Experiencing Empathy 2019: The Necessity of Resistance, Resilience, and Change," a program of the Anthropology Department, the Days-Massolo Center, and the Digital Humanities Initiative.

Associated Colleges in China Program
Associated Colleges in China (ACC) is an intensive Chinese language program that offers students the opportunity to experience the language, history, and culture of China. Established in 1996, ACC is administered by Hamilton and hosted by the Minzu University of China in Beijing. At least one year of study in Chinese is required prior to being accepted into the program. Participating students must pledge to speak only Chinese.

NYC Immersion Day
Nineteen students participated in the Career Center's NYC Immersion Day. The visit to New York City allowed students to explore potential career interests through site visits, panel discussions, and alumni networking. Visits were hosted by young alumni who discussed how Hamilton's liberal arts education and alumni network prepared them for diverse career choices after college. The program was initiated in January 2017 to help students explore different industries and jobs to make well-informed career decisions.

Twenty-five students have been selected to participate in the Levitt Leadership Institute, a competitive, two-week intensive leadership training program for Hamilton students. Funded in part by former SEC Chairman Arthur Levitt, the institute offers students the opportunity to develop and practice personal leadership skills in the context of their individual career interests with a focus on developing a global mindset, ethical behaviors, and regard for the public good.

Smallen Creativity Grants
Twelve students were recently awarded grants from The Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund. The Fund is designed to encourage creativity among Hamilton students by providing funds for projects displaying originality, expressiveness, and imagination. The fund was established in 1993 by former Vice President for Libraries and Information Technology David Smallen and his wife Ann in memory of their son Steven. Steven Smallen studied at Hamilton for a year while receiving treatment for leukemia, before losing his battle with cancer in 1992.

Senior Studio Art Tour
Fifteen senior art majors took part in a tour of five New York City artists' studios. The annual educational trip, led by Hamilton art faculty members, enables the seniors to see the artists' work, talk to them, and ask career-related questions. This year's tour included visits to the studios of Loren Munk, Eileen Quinlan, Ellie Krakow, Peter Krashes, and Laurel Nakadate, whose work explores a wide range of mediums and processes.
