Twenty-two Hamilton students presented their research at the New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium Upstate New York Undergraduate Research Conference at Union College. The presentations were based on research in the sciences and through Emerson Foundation grants conducted during the summer with Hamilton faculty.

Hamilton students are participating in Hamilton's Fall Theatre production of TRAGEDY: a tragedy, written by Will Eno and directed by Professor of Theatre Craig Latrell. TRAGEDY: a tragedy, is Eno's hilarious, one of a kind play skewers the never ending modern news cycle while capturing the underlying human need to apply order to an increasingly absurd world.

Associated Colleges in China Program
Associated Colleges in China (ACC) is an intensive Chinese language program that offers students the opportunity to experience the language, history, and culture of China. Established in 1996, ACC is administered by Hamilton and hosted by the Minzu University of China in Beijing. At least one year of study in Chinese is required prior to being accepted into the program. Participating students must pledge to speak only Chinese.

Hamilton College Emergency Medical Service Team
The Hamilton College Emergency Medical Service (HCEMS) is a New York State certified agency that is made up of 25 student emergency medical technicians (EMT) who provide 24-hour emergency service to the campus community during the academic year. Along with the rest of the nation, Hamilton recognizes the achievements of its EMTs during National Collegiate EMS Week, the week of November 11.

Mock Trial Team
Hamilton's Mock Trial team is a competitive intercollegiate trial simulation team that competes nationally at other colleges and universities and in American Mock Trial Association tournaments. Mock Trial members learn basic and advanced trial law skills through the team's trial advocacy program. These skills include persuasive speaking and rhetoric skills, acting skills, and legal reading and writing skills.

Alternative Fall Break Trip
Six students participated in this year's Alternative Fall Break trip. Part of Hamilton's Alternative Break program, the fall trip is modeled after the College's other alternative break trips in which student volunteers provide service to non-profit organizations. Students participating in the program this fall travelled to Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne, N.Y., where they volunteered with Double H's Comfort Camp Weekend. Double H Ranch is a SeriousFun Children's Network camp that offers year-round programs for children and the families of children with serious or chronic illnesses.

The Nesbitt-Johnston Writing Center was established in 1987 to help all Hamilton students strengthen their writing abilities. Writing Center tutors are trained to review such aspects of student work as clarifying ideas, developing a thesis, organizing stages of an argument, and strengthening specific language.

Hamilton's Oral Communication Center (OCC) offers tutoring to students working on specific oral communication projects or general communication concerns. Students serving as OCC peer tutors provide coaching and advice on a variety of assignment types including oral presentations and exams, debates, panel discussions, podcasts, readings, interviews, poster presentations, and more.

Off-Campus Study: Washington, D.C.
Fifteen students are participating in the Hamilton Program in Washington this fall. The program provides a combination of academic study and experience in national government. Students in the program conduct research and attend two seminars led by a resident member of Hamilton's government department, and at the same time work full time in congressional or executive offices, think tanks, NGOs, non-profits, and lobbying and consulting firms.

Students Studying in New York City
Fifteen students are participating in Hamilton's New York City Program this fall. The program is structured so that students spend four days a week as interns in a firm or organization, attend weekly seminars on the semester's topic, and do an independent project. This semester's program, The Global Labor Market, is directed by Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics.

Convocation Awards 2019
Hamilton College opens each academic year with its traditional Convocation ceremony. Members of the administration welcome students and new faculty, and academic achievement prizes are awarded to students. This year, more than 60 students received prizes at the ceremony on Aug. 28 that officially marked the beginning of Hamilton's 208th academic year.

Upstate Medical University Summer Program
Seven students are participating in the six-week Hamilton College U-Care Summer Volunteer Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y., gaining hands-on clinical experience to better prepare them for careers in the medical professions. The program also gives students exposure to the field with lectures and opportunities to shadow during patient rounds.

Six Hamilton students are participating in the New River Headwaters Archaeology Project, a six-week field school in Ashe County, N.C., led by Assistant Professor of Anthropology Colin Quinn. The group is investigating a prehistoric village - the Woodie Site - conducting geophysical survey and excavations designed to find material remains from the site.

Students Collaborate on Giant Peony Sculpture
Seven students had the opportunity to work with Ethiopian artist Elias Sime as he created a site-specific oversized peony sculpture as part of his fall exhibition at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art. "Flowers and Roots" is made of repurposed computer parts, electrical wire, bronze sheeting, and cast stone amalgam. It was inspired by the tree peonies hybridized by Professor of Chemistry A.P. Saunders from 1920 to 1940, many of which are on display in Hamilton's Grant Garden.

Commencement 2019
The Class of 2019 graduated on Sunday, May 26, in a ceremony concluding the College's 207th year. Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, delivered the Commencement address, advising graduates to "keep asking the hard questions and keep thinking of things we've not thought about - about social justice and inequality and seeking the truth." Hamilton's 490 graduates now join an alumni body of more than 23,000, many of whom have made important contributions to business, the professions, government and the arts.

Student Assembly
The Student Assembly is a duly-elected representative organization that works on behalf of Hamilton students. As such, it acts with the ability to work and communicate with the faculty, staff, college administration, and other affiliated groups. Student Assembly works to support three goals - to actively promote undergraduate student interests, provide student organizational support, and to provide the experience of handling leadership. Every year, Student Assembly works on topics ranging from campus improvements to college issues, as well as recognizing and funding more than 100 student organizations.

Class & Charter Day Awards 2019
Hamilton's annual Class & Charter Day took place on May 13. Established in 1950, the event combines the traditional Class Day celebrating the end of classes with a commemoration of the granting of College's charter on May 26, 1812. The ceremony features an address by a historian, trustee, alumnus, or faculty member whose (subject) topic is related to Hamilton's history and traditions. Academic and scholarly achievement prizes are awarded to students and faculty. More than 150 students received prizes this year. In addition, 10 faculty members were honored for their contributions in the classroom.

WHCL Executive Board
WHCL is a non-profit, student-run FM station that operates seven days a week, 24-hours-a-day when school is in session. The station offers music, sports, and public affairs programming. Housed in the Sadove Student Center, WHCL is one of Hamilton's largest student organizations.

Spring Theatre Production: West Side Story
Sixty students participated in the Spring Theatre production of West Side Story, directed by Professor of Theatre Mark Cryer. A cast of 26 students participated in the Spring Theatre production of West Side Story, directed by Professor of Theatre Mark Cryer. A live orchestra, featuring 30 students and conducted by Heather Buchman, accompanied the performance. The classic American musical received an update with the Theatre Department's production. Set in 2018 Bronx, New York, five months after hurricane Maria, the timeless musical tells a story of love, of otherness and street gangs. West Side Story was presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

Model UN Team
Hamilton's Model UN team attended three conferences during the spring 2019 semester and won awards at each. This is the first time in MUN history that the team has taken awards at every conference they attended in a semester, and they are currently on a streak of four straight conferences where Hamilton has received at least one award.

Himalayan Mountaineering Class Visits Nepal
Eleven Hamilton students traveled to the Annapurna region of Nepal over spring break as part of this semester's Himalayan Mountaineering class. Taught by Professor of History Maurice Isserman, the course examines Himalayan mountaineering over the past 150 years, and its roots in imperial expansion, national competition, and cultural and social evolution. The trip was supervised by Assistant Director of Outdoor Leadership Sarah Jillings.

Alternative Spring Break
Thirty-six students participated in Hamilton's 26th annual Alternative Spring Break. Participants traveled to Rockbridge, Va., Goldsboro-Wayne, N.C., and Marion County, S.C., to work on Habitat for Humanity projects, and to Baltimore to work with youth. Alternative Spring Break is aimed at increasing students' awareness and concern of social issues while generating a life-long interest in community service.
