Hamilton College

Twenty Hamilton students spent spring break hiking to the base camp of Annapurna in Nepal's Himalayas. The trip was an optional part of Professor Maurice Isserman's course History of Himalayan Mountaineering. The course examines Himalayan mountaineering over the past 150 years, and its roots in imperial expansion, national competition, and cultural and social evolution. The trip was supervised by Director of Outdoor Leadership Andrew Jillings.

Twenty-nine students participated in Hamilton's Alternative Spring Break this year. Participants traveled to Millfield, Ohio, and Sussex County, Del., to work on Habitat for Humanity projects, and to Greensboro, N.C., to work with Guilford College's Every Campus a Refuge Program that helps support the transition of refugee families. Alternative Spring Break is aimed at increasing students' awareness and concern of social issues while generating a life-long interest in community service.

WHCL is a non-profit, student-run FM station that operates seven days a week, 24-hours-a-day when school is in session. The station offers music, sports, and public affairs programming. Housed in the Sadove Student Center, WHCL is one of Hamilton's largest student organizations.

Eight students are participating in Hamilton's New York City Program this spring. The program is structured so that students spend four days a week as interns in a firm or organization, attend weekly seminars on the semester's topic, and complete an independent project.

Hamilton in France provides students an international academic experience that reflects Hamilton's commitment to the liberal arts and personal exploration. The program is based in central Paris; students stay in (carefully chosen) French-speaking homes where they can live the language and culture. The program includes organized excursions/study trips to various regions in France and in and around Paris. These trips help build up the student experience in France beyond the classroom in meaningful, and fun, ways.

The Hamilton College Academic Year in Madrid, Spain, offers students the opportunity to develop true linguistic proficiency and to experience the many facets of Spanish life. Through personal contact with the culture, language, ideals, and customs of another country, participants step beyond the familiarity and comforts of their own environment to gain a new perspective on international affairs and a greater respect for and understanding of another people.

Eighteen students have been awarded grants from The Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund. The Fund is designed to encourage creativity among Hamilton students by providing funds for projects displaying originality, expressiveness, and imagination. The Fund was established in 1993 by former Vice President for Libraries and Information Technology David Smallen and his wife Ann in memory of their son Steven. Steven Smallen studied at Hamilton for a year while receiving treatment for leukemia, before losing his battle with cancer in 1992.

Seven students have been named recipients of this year's Class of 1979 Student Travel Awards. The award, established by the alumni of Hamilton's Class of 1979, offers financial assistance to certain outstanding Hamilton students who wish to pursue extensive research projects in different parts of the world or present their work at conferences.

Twenty-five Hamilton students performed in the Dance and Movement Studies Department's annual spring dance concert on March 4 and 5. The performance was choreographed by Hamilton faculty Elaine Heekin, Julia Shove, Bruce Walczyk, and Paris Wilcox, along with guest choreographer John Castagna of Ballet Collective/LA, and Hamilton senior Toscana Ogihara.

The Hamilton Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa is pleased to announce the election of 15 members of the class of 2022. Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic honorary society in the United States, honors students for both excellence in academic achievement and breadth of intellectual study.

The COOP Service Internship (CSI) Program puts Hamilton students in close contact with area service organizations through paid internships with a variety of nonprofit agencies. Each CSI works at least six hours per week on site at their nonprofit agency, helping them identify skills and interests and explore career options. When a group of interns "graduates" after their sophomore year, they're on the road to becoming leaders in the community.

More than 1,140 students have been named to the fall 2021 Dean's List. To be named to the Dean's List, a student must have carried throughout the semester a course load of four or more graded credits with an average of 3.5 or above.

The Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art joins traditional object-based learning with advances in interdisciplinary approaches. The Wellin's student docents are integral to the work of the museum and participate in various aspects of museum operation. They lead tours, collaborate with Hamilton faculty to provide customized, interdisciplinary gallery programs that support teaching and learning, and work on specialized projects within a specific museum department.

A cast and crew more than 45 students participated in the Fall Theatre production of 10 Out of 12, by playwright Anne Washburn. The play focuses on a fictional technical rehearsal in which actors can only work 10 of the 12 hours they are on set, as per union rules. And, as in a real technical rehearsal, some cast members, such as those playing stage managers or lighting/sound designers, sit in the audience. Directed by Professor of Theatre Craig Latrell, 10 Out of 12 was the first Hamilton production with a full audience, and maskless actors onstage since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

The Hamilton College Emergency Medical Service (HCEMS) is a New York State certified agency that is made up of 23 student emergency medical technicians (EMT) who provide 24-hour emergency service to the campus community during the academic year. Along with the rest of the nation, Hamilton recognizes the achievements of its EMTs during National Collegiate EMS Week, the week of November 8.

Twelve students are participating in the Hamilton Program in Washington this fall. The program provides a combination of academic study and experience in national government. Students in the program conduct research and attend two seminars led by a resident member of Hamilton's government department, and at the same time work full time in congressional or executive offices, think tanks, NGOs, non-profits, and lobbying and consulting firms.

Hamilton's Oral Communication Center (OCC) offers tutoring to students working on specific oral communication projects or general communication concerns. Students serving as OCC peer tutors provide coaching and advice on a variety of assignment types including oral presentations and exams, debates, panel discussions, podcasts, readings, interviews, poster presentations, and more.

This year, 35 students are serving as peer tutors in Hamilton's Quantitative & Symbolic Reasoning Center (QSR). The mission of the QSR Center is to support students in the development of their academic skills, and to foster collaborative learning and intellectual growth.

The Nesbitt-Johnston Writing Center was established in 1987 to help all Hamilton students strengthen their writing abilities. Writing Center tutors are trained to review such aspects of student work as clarifying ideas, developing a thesis, organizing stages of an argument, and strengthening specific language.

Hamilton's Counseling Center offers students a wide array of wellness-based services with an emphasis on trust, respect, and connection. Peer counselors provide additional resources to other Hamilton students as they navigate difficult decisions, points of crisis, or everyday aspects of student life.

The Hamilton Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa is pleased to announce the election of ten members of the Class of 2022. Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic honorary society in the United States, honors students for both excellence in academic achievement and breadth of intellectual study.

Hamilton recently welcomed 533 members of the Class of 2025. They were selected from a pool of 9,380 applicants.

Hamilton College opens each academic year with its traditional Convocation ceremony. Members of the administration welcome students and new faculty, and academic achievement prizes are awarded to students. This year, 56 students received prizes at the ceremony on August 25 that officially marked the beginning of Hamilton's 210th academic year.

More than 1,100 students have been named to the Hamilton College spring 2021 Dean's List. To be named to the Dean's List, a student must have carried throughout the semester a course load of four or more graded credits with an average of 3.5 or above.

The Class of 2021 graduated on Saturday, May 22, in a ceremony concluding the College's 209th year. Ty Seidule, a military historian and the College's inaugural Chamberlain Fellow, was awarded an honorary degree and delivered the Commencement address. He advised the graduates never to stop learning and striving to achieve the College's motto, Know Thyself. "Know your own history. Know your community's history. Keep questioning. Because that is really the only way to know thyself," he said. Hamilton's 473 graduates now join an alumni body of more than 24,000, many of whom have made important contributions to business, the professions, government and the arts.
